Depop safety: avoid scams

Depop Buyer Protection covers in-app shipped orders only. Counterfeit drops, fake-payment emails, off-platform Instagram DM moves and account bans all fall outside it — those gaps are where the dominant UK Depop scam patterns operate.

Depop Payments covers only in-app shipped orders — the platform holds the buyer’s money and only releases it on delivery confirmation. The single most common UK Depop scam is being pushed to pay outside the app via PayPal Friends & Family, bank transfer or Instagram DM. Run any listing through SilentID Safety Check, any seller through Seller Lookup, and use PIN Pickup for any local meet-up.

How Depop Buyer Protection works

Depop Payments holds the buyer’s money the moment they pay in-app. The seller is paid out only after the buyer confirms receipt or the auto-confirmation window passes. Depop Buyer Protection covers any purchase made through Depop Payments — so long as the item never arrives, arrives broken or arrives significantly not as described, you can open a claim and Depop will refund.

That single rule explains every common Depop scam in the UK. Fraudsters work the boundary — moving the chat or payment outside Depop Payments onto PayPal F&F, a bank transfer, or an Instagram DM with a fake checkout link. Once the payment leaves Depop’s app flow, neither side has access to its dispute mechanism, and outcomes depend entirely on bank recourse, Action Fraud reporting, and the evidence you kept.

6 common Depop scams in the UK

The patterns are highly repeatable. Two or more of these signals should trigger a hard stop.

  1. Asks you to pay outside Depop Payments

PayPal Friends & Family, bank transfer, or "DM me your IBAN". Depop Payments is the only payment method covered by Depop Buyer Protection. Anything else has zero recourse.

  2. Move chat to Instagram or WhatsApp

Within the first few messages they ask for your Instagram or push to WhatsApp — usually because the listing is set up for off-platform payment and they want to escape Depop moderation.

  3. Designer drop, suspiciously cheap

Stussy, Stone Island, Supreme, Carhartt WIP at 60-80% below resale. Often the listing photos are stolen from authentic resellers — reverse-image-search them.

  4. Brand-new account, no sales

No reviews, no closed sales, generic profile photo, listings posted in a single batch. New accounts are over-represented in Depop scam reports.

  5. "Discount if you pay direct" message

Sellers offering 10-20% off if you pay PayPal F&F or bank transfer are bypassing Depop fees — and Depop Buyer Protection. Walk away.

  6. "Item not received" after tracked delivery

A reverse scam: the buyer claims non-receipt despite tracked proof of delivery. Always send tracked, take a packing/handover video, and use Depop's prepaid label.

For Depop buyers: how to stay safe

  • Always pay through Depop Payments. If the seller offers a 10-20% discount for paying PayPal F&F or bank transfer, walk away. The discount is the bait.
  • Run the listing through Safety Check in the SilentID app — 14-signal fraud screen including price, account age, image reuse, off-platform pressure and stolen-listing duplication.
  • Run the seller through Seller Lookup. A genuine Depop seller usually has a cross-platform footprint — Vinted, eBay, Etsy or Instagram. A complete cold-start with brand-new designer drops is a red flag.
  • Use Deal Scanner on designer items. If the price is 60%+ below market, it is almost certainly counterfeit or a non-shipping scam.
  • Stay in the Depop chat until the deal is closed. Don’t share Instagram or WhatsApp.

For Depop sellers: how to stay safe

  • Only ship after Depop Payments confirms the saleinside the app. Email and screenshot “proofs” are forgeries.
  • Use Depop’s prepaid shipping label. Tracking and proof of postage are then on file inside the platform.
  • Record a packing video. SilentID Video Evidence creates a tamper-sealed, timestamped clip — bullet-proof for “item not received” or “not as described” disputes.
  • Don’t accept “extra postage” bank transfers outside the app — that money goes to the scammer, not the courier.
  • Use Trust Passport to share verified ID + cross-platform ratings with hesitant high-value buyers. Reassuring new buyers usually closes the sale.

Why cross-platform reputation matters on Depop

A single platform’s rating system can be wiped out by an accidental ban or a chargeback dispute — Cifas reports 89% of users never recover their ratings after a marketplace ban (Source: Cifas). Trust Passport stores your verified identity (Stripe Identity) plus your ratings from Vinted, eBay, Depop, Etsy and Poshmark in one place. If Depop ever bans you in error, you keep everything. Buyers see one TrustScore (0-1000) backed by real checks across platforms, not just one app’s vote.

If you have been scammed on Depop

  • Open a dispute inside the Depop app immediately — the auto-confirmation window is short.
  • Forward phishing emails to report@phishing.gov.uk (NCSC).
  • Report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.
  • Tell your bank fraud team immediately if money has left your account.
  • Generate a PDF evidence pack in SilentID Pro, designed to be accepted by Depop, Action Fraud and your bank.

Frequently asked questions

Depop Payments holds the buyer's money until delivery confirmation, with Depop Buyer Protection applied to in-app shipped orders only. Off-platform payments (PayPal F&F, bank transfer, Instagram DM) have zero protection. Depop scam reports almost always involve a step outside the official payment flow — fake-payment emails, counterfeit drops shipped before money clears, and Instagram DM moves are the dominant UK patterns.
