eBay safety: UK buyers + sellers
eBay Money Back Guarantee covers shipped purchases — but local-pickup cash, off-eBay payment moves and empty-box returns are growing. Here is the full UK 2026 stack.
Free download. iOS & Android. UK-first.
eBay Managed Payments covers only shipped in-app purchases — every shipped purchase is covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee. The risk areas are off-eBay payments (PayPal F&F, bank transfer), local-pickup cash-onlydeals (no protection), and empty-box returns against sellers. Run any listing through Safety Check, any seller through Seller Lookup, use PIN Pickup for collection and Video Evidence for packing and unboxing.
How eBay Money Back Guarantee works
Every item paid for through eBay Managed Payments is covered. If the item never arrives, arrives broken or arrives significantly not as described, the buyer can open a case in My eBay and the platform will refund. The seller’s payout is held until the case is resolved.
Two big exceptions: local pickup paid in cash is not covered, and any payment made outside eBay (PayPal F&F, bank transfer, “direct deal”) is not covered. Stay inside the protected flow and eBay handles the dispute for you.
6 common eBay scams in the UK
Asks to complete the deal off eBay
Seller (or buyer) suggests cancelling the eBay listing and "doing it direct" via PayPal F&F or bank transfer for a small discount. The discount is bait — eBay Money Back Guarantee evaporates the moment you leave the platform.
Empty-box or swap-back return
Buyer opens a "not as described" return, then sends back an empty box, a brick or a broken counterfeit. eBay's seller-protection rules don't fully cover this — record an unboxing video on receipt of every return.
Brand-new account on a high-value listing
A first-day eBay account bidding on a £500+ item is a serious red flag — usually a stolen-card account that will trigger a chargeback days after delivery.
Stolen-listing duplication
Listing copy, photos and price copied verbatim from a legitimate auction. Reverse-image-search the photos before you buy. The genuine seller still has their item; the duplicate sender will pocket your money and vanish.
Pressure to pay outside eBay Managed Payments
"PayPal F&F to my partner's account", "bank transfer to skip fees". Anything other than eBay Managed Payments at checkout means zero buyer protection.
Local-pickup with cash-only and no eBay protection
eBay Money Back Guarantee does not cover collection-only items paid in cash. For local pickup, use PIN Pickup so the money is held until both sides confirm.
Paying for an eBay local collection
eBay Money Back Guarantee does not cover local pickup paid in cash. For collection-only listings — common on bulky items like bikes, drum kits and white goods — the safest options are PIN Pickup or refusing the deal.

For eBay sellers: protect against chargebacks and empty-box returns
- Always use eBay-issued tracked labels. Proof of postage and tracking are then on file inside the platform — essential for “item not received” defences.
- Record a packing video for any item over £30. SilentID Video Evidence creates a tamper-sealed, timestamped clip showing the item being packed, the address label and the seal.
- Record an unboxing video the moment a return arrives — before opening. This is the standard defence against the empty-box / brick-swap scam.
- Use Trust Passport to share verified ID + cross-platform ratings — Cifas data shows 89% of users never recover their ratings after a marketplace ban (Source: Cifas), so portable reputation is critical.
- Refuse off-eBay payment requests. “PayPal F&F to skip fees” loses you eBay Seller Protection.
For eBay buyers: how to stay safe
- Stay inside eBay Managed Payments. Decline every “direct” or “outside eBay” offer.
- Run the listing through Safety Check. 14 signals cover price, account age, image reuse, stolen-listing duplication, unsafe payment demands and brand-impersonation.
- Run the seller through Seller Lookup. Cross-platform reputation across eBay, Vinted, Depop, Etsy and Marketplace is the strongest honesty signal.
- Use PIN Pickup at collection. Money held until both sides confirm with a 6-digit PIN.
- Watch for fake “eBay account suspended” emails. These are phishing — eBay never asks for password confirmation by email link. Forward to report@phishing.gov.uk.
If you have been scammed on eBay

- Report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.
- Forward phishing emails (fake suspension notices, fake invoices) to report@phishing.gov.uk.
- Generate a PDF evidence pack in SilentID Pro for eBay, Action Fraud and your bank.
