Gumtree safety guide (UK)

Gumtree is a classifieds site — it has no built-in buyer protection. Safety is entirely down to how you pay and how you meet. Here is the UK 2026 stack.

Gumtree is a classifieds site with no built-in buyer protection — the platform lists adverts but does not handle payment. Safety is entirely down to how you pay and how you meet. Never pay a deposit before viewing, run the seller through SilentID Seller Lookup, screen the listing with Safety Check, and use PIN Pickup at collection so money is held until both sides confirm with a 6-digit PIN.

Why Gumtree safety is different from Vinted or Depop

Gumtree is a classifieds platform, not a marketplace. There is no escrow, no Buyer Protection scheme and no held-payments mechanism — Gumtree lists the advert and then steps out of the transaction. That makes it valuable for big local items (cars, sofas, washing machines, push bikes, room rentals) but means every safety decision falls on you.

The good news: Gumtree fraud is highly patterned. Six scam templates cover the vast majority of UK reports. Spot the signals and you clear them at a glance.

6 common Gumtree scams in the UK

  1. Pay-to-hold deposit before viewing

Classic Gumtree car, sofa or rental scam: "Pay £100 deposit to reserve". The seller, the car and the room never existed. Genuine sellers are happy for you to view first.

  2. Seller is "abroad" or "moving"

"I'm an oil-rig worker / nurse working in Dubai / military stationed overseas — payment via my agent". Almost always a script. Walk away.

  3. Courier collection without you meeting

Seller insists their "courier" or "shipping company" will collect from a neutral location. Real courier firms don't accept third-party item handovers. The "courier" is the scammer.

  4. Refusal to share a phone number

Genuine sellers will give a UK mobile and answer it. Chat-only contact, especially via WhatsApp from a foreign number, is a serious red flag.

  5. Photos that reverse-search to other listings

Stock-quality images, watermarks from other sites, or photos that appear unchanged on AutoTrader/eBay/Marketplace. Right-click and reverse-image-search before paying anything.

  6. Overpayment then "send the difference back"

Targeted at Gumtree sellers: "I'll send £600 for the £400 sofa, please refund the £200 to my courier". The original payment is fraudulent and gets reversed days later. The £200 you sent is gone.

How to pay safely for a Gumtree pickup

Bank transfer is the default, and the most dangerous, payment method for Gumtree. Once a Faster Payment leaves your bank, there is no recall. UK retail banks have started friction (Santander protected over 1,800 customers from FB Marketplace transfers in 2025 — Source: Santander UK) but the same risk applies to Gumtree. High-risk Gumtree categories: vehicles and rentals

Vehicles. Always view the car at the seller’s home address. Check the V5C document is in their name and that the address matches their driving licence. Run an HPI check (outstanding finance, write-off, mileage discrepancy). Never pay a deposit before viewing. For payment itself: cleared bank transfer made at the seller’s address with the keys in your hand, or PIN Pickup for cars under £5,000.

Rentals. Rental fraud on Gumtree typically asks for “deposit + first month’s rent” before viewing. The flat is real but does not belong to the “landlord”, who has copied the photos. Always view in person, ask to see proof of ownership or a Tenancy Agreement, and refuse to pay anything until you are about to sign. The Property Ombudsman and National Trading Standards publish further guidance.

For Gumtree sellers: the overpayment scam

  • Refuse any payment that exceeds your asking price.“Pay extra for my courier” is the canonical Gumtree overpayment scam.
  • Wait for funds to clear — bank transfers can be reversed for days. PIN Pickup avoids this entirely (settlement is instant via Faster Payments and irreversible).
  • Pick a meeting spot that suits both of you. Both sides are identity-verified through Trust Passport before the meet, so it’s about convenience, not anonymity. Many sellers wait until the buyer is on the way before sharing the exact address.
  • Record a handover video for high-value items — SilentID Video Evidence creates a tamper-sealed clip.

For Gumtree buyers: the deposit scam

  • Never pay a deposit before viewing. No genuine seller needs one.
  • Run the listing through Safety Check — the 14 fraud signals catch image reuse, account age, off-platform pressure, unsafe payment demand and stolen-listing duplication.
  • Run the seller through Seller Lookup. Cross-platform footprint is the single best honesty signal.
  • Insist on a phone call to a UK mobile before travelling.
  • Use PIN Pickup at collection — money held until both sides confirm.

If you have been scammed on Gumtree

  • Report the listing inside Gumtree using the “Report this ad” button so the seller can be removed.
  • Call your bank fraud team immediately if money has left your account.
  • Report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.
  • Forward phishing emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
  • Generate a PDF evidence pack in SilentID Pro for Action Fraud, your bank and Gumtree.

Frequently asked questions

Gumtree is a classifieds platform — it lists adverts but does not handle the payment, and provides no built-in escrow or buyer protection. That means there is no platform-level recourse if a deal goes wrong. Action Fraud reports consistently feature Gumtree alongside Facebook Marketplace as a top source of UK purchase fraud, particularly for vehicles, electronics, rentals and tools. Mitigations: use PIN Pickup for any collection, never bank-transfer a deposit before viewing, and run sellers through SilentID Seller Lookup before committing.
